Experiences with Pushback in Accessibility & Computing Research

About the study

We are researchers from the Baskin School of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz, the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Google Research. Our research team includes Cynthia Bennett, Shaun Kane, Amanda Lazar, Kate Ringland, and Norman Makoto Su.

We are interested in learning about different experiences from people who have perceived, observed, or participated in pushback related to accessibility/disability computing research.

Your experience should have taken place between individuals conducting research related to disability and/or accessibility. This could have taken place anywhere: at a conference (e.g., CHI, ASSETS), your work, in reviews or on social media.

Please note, we are generally not referring to pushback from the current US administration’s executive orders targeting DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) initiatives.

Who we’re looking for

We are interested in hearing from people who have worked in this research area, at all levels and in both industry and academia. For example, you may have experience conducting research, attending conferences, or publishing papers related to accessibility/disability computing research.

Your participation involves

  • Filling out a short survey (< 5 minutes) about your background
  • Writing a short story about accessibility/disability computing research describing a time where you perceived, observed, or participated in pushback
  • Optionally responding to feedback on your story from researchers and revising your story
  • By default, your identity will be kept private in any reports where the study may be published
  • You may also participate anonymously

Why Participate?

The data from your stories will help the research community understand the challenges of a changing profession and its implications for how we conduct and evaluate accessibility and disability computing research.

Interested?

If you are interested in participating, please fill out our survey, and we will reach out to you. The survey has instructions if you wish to participate anonymously.

If you have questions, please .
